I. Elements of Magical Realism

This is what Ursula said to Prudencio’s image. After he died she is suffering by Prudencio’s image which is pierced throat.

II. Characters

Ursula Iguaran- she has afraid get a child with Jose Arcadio Buendia

Jose Arcadio- falls in love with gypsy and betrayed Pilar Ternera.
Prudencio Aguilar- he mocked Jose Arcadio Buendia about getting child also he killed by Jose Arcadio Buendia .

Pilar Ternera- She is the local woman who pregnant Jose Arcadio’s child. .
Amaranta- she is the Jose Arcadia Buendia and Ursula’s daughter.

III. Plot Summary

Jose Arcadio Buendia and Ursula get married in Macondo. After they got married, they also got a problem of getting child because they are the relatives. They are afraid of genetic disorder to child. Moreover the village people mocked at Jose Arcadia Buendia. And Jose Arcadia Buendia had a cock fight with Prudencio. Even though Jose Arcadia Buendia was won Prudencio mock him. But this time Jose Arcadia Buendia killed Prudencio. That night Jose Arcadia Buendia and Ursula had sex. However after that Ursula suffered from Prudencio’s ghost so they decided leave the village. Meanwhile, the older son, José Arcadio, made Pilar Ternera pregnant. He also betrayed her because of fall in love with gypsy girl and they left village together. When they leave Ursula also followed and discovered that route of other village.

IV. Quotes

“I don’t care if I have piglets as long as they can talk.” P. 20

“If you bear iguanas, we’ll raise iguanas. But there’ll be no more killings in this town because of you.” p.21

I know that they are in the hard situation of getting child. So I like to his mind of wanting child. if he said this quote without anger it should be better quote.

V.Themes

Love- Jose Arcadio fall in love with girls also he betrayed girls.

Anger- because of the anger, Jose Arcadio Buendia killed Prudencio Aguilar

Child- most characters in this book have problem of child.

I.  Elements of Magical Realism

 “Very soon we’ll have gold enough and more to pave the floors of the house”

I think this is the magical realism quote because Jose Arcadio buendia had serious dream about alchemy.

II. Characters

Jose Arcadio Buendia- He is the First generation of Macondo.  Also he fell in study of mistery things (science) by gypsies.

Melquiades- leader of the group of gypsies that came Macondo every March.

Ursula Iguaran- Jose Arcadio’s wife and made he keep away from science study.

Colonel Aureliano Buendia- no change

III. Plot summary

 Jose Archadio Buendia and Ursula were living in the Macondo. Marcondo was a village of twenty adobe houses and every March gypsies came and set up their tents near the village. One day, Jose Arcadio fell in science study because of gypsies’ interesting things like magnets, magnifying glasses, and telescopes. His passion of study science made he looks like mad person. He always stays at his laboratory and studied. But Ursula persuades out of the science study him by family and life of Macondo. So he quite the study at his laboratory and more focused on the child. However, this chapter ended up with he brought his child at the gypsies’ tents and shows ice.

IV. Quotes

“If you have to go crazy, please go crazy all by yourself! But don’t try to put your gypsy ideas into the heads of the children” p.5

“Instead of going around thinking about your crazy inventions, you should be worrying about your sons”p.14

I can not forget these quotes because these quotes are very realistic arguing. Also I could understand how Ursula cares about her sons than what Jose Arcadio Buendia do.

V. Themes

Family- Jose Arcadio’s too much interest of science brought problems of family.

Perspective- this chapter shows very different perspective between Jose Arcadio and Ursula.

Out side effect- gypsies’ invention from out side of Macondo brought interest into Macondo people.

The case for the Defense of TARZAN

Tarzan is the one of the best book in the world. This book mainly talks about relationships and human being that destroying the nature. This book can not be banned, because this book has a lot of teaching and entertainment. Furthermore, there are a lot of Tarzan movies and games. As one of the reader, I am saying this book can not be banned.

First this book made when time that industrial revolution. So there was a lot of human greedy and human’s wrong doing things that cut down the jungles and destroy the nature. You can see this happening in the book. In the book, people trying to destroy jungle and they have full of desire of money. The author E.R. Burroughs tried shows this problem by view point of the Tarzan who grows from the jungle also that has innocent characteristic. Secondly, there is no sexual thing in the novel. I hope to not talking about the Tarzan’s clothing. Anyway he is not naked and there are only gorillas. I am pretty sure that most of young child already showed this book or movies. Which means their parents already agreed to show. Thirdly, it has education about how dangerous of the mechanical things. People will learn about the dangerous of gun and any other mechanical things that can be harmed people, animal and nature. Also you can see this happening in the book; also this time you could see the burning jungle. The last reason is that it has game! It means it is for the child. I never heard about game that based on the book. Even I could remember still now and I really enjoyed this game. Also I hope not to talk about game over. That is your control problem. I am sure that the game maker does not want to game over that is why every game has good or bad ending. However, the Tarzan’s ending is very very happy ending which is live with the lover in the jungle. From this all reasons Tarzan can not be banned. This book is very unique. The author’s way of communicate with reader is very interesting. I have not seen this kind of book. Also as a reader, we should respect the author. The banned is not the solution. And I can not found the reason of banned, I could say because there are no problems

Roland~!

I am very confusing and worrying about my situation. I am feeling like something will happen tomorrow during the negotiation with Saragossa. I can not believe Marsilla who is the king of Saragossa, I know him and he lie last time. However I have to follow my king’s decision. So I recommend king to send Ganelon, who is my stepfather, to Saragossa because I know him well and he is the one who agree with Saragossa’s negotiation. I just hope to him to do not doubt me. I do not have any other reason. But I am feeling very nervous, I am not feeling good. If something happen tomorrow, I have to do stop it anyways. I am the leader and this is my job. Even if my people think I am too much prideful and selfish, I have to do things in my position. Hero, this is what people will think what I am seeking. But I do not want hero or any other title. I just do my job and want to keep our country. Olivier, he will understand me and he will help me in any situation. Anyway everything will finish by tomorrow.

Leader~!~!

1.     I can not choose valuable leader because both of characteristic has good value and weak value. For example, from the excellent leader other people can learn a lot of things. I can say this leader is valuable to everyone because he has enough ability to take care everyone. However, if the leader believes only his ability too much, doesn’t care his group member and has pretty bad characteristic, his group and the leader will have a lot of fighting. In this case, this group will ruin. How about the group has good balance between leader and group member? They are good at working together and they have good relationship between each other. But this case has weak point. They are good at only teamwork. It does not meaning the leader is talented also his followers. If the leader has good personality, he can lead his team smoothly. So I can not say this leader is valuable in leader. It can is base on personality. I can not choose leader between two.

2.     To me Ideas about the qualities that a good leader need are responsibility, ability, trust, steadfast, desire, ambition, love, friends, patience, effort, mercy, confidence, healthy, six sense, good expectation, humble, royal, prideful, self-control, positive and  humorous. Most important thing is trust each other, because everything is related with this. Leader who does not care his people, this leader can not get trust from his people at the very important time.

3.     I could not understand whole story well. During his death and conversation between Roland and his followers, I can see the Roland was royal, honest leader to his people and they have trust each other. So I can say he is a good leader. Moreover he has trust so He is the leader who I think.

“Education will open doors where none seem to exist.”?????

“Education will open doors where none seem to exist.” I am disagreeing with this statement. To me, this sentence does not make sense. In my opinion, education is just basic foundation to think better. Also we can learn more worthy things out of the education, education has limit. According to statement no educate people can not doing anything. This is wrong idea. Moreover, before we got the education, we have to decide and we have to some desire of learning. Education is not duty, so it can not come to us. We have to connect like story of the Kaffir boy. Education has a lot of stuff and step. That is why some of people can not be educated. So I believe education will be help to think better way. Also we can not ignore non educated people, because their idea and thought can not be found in what we educated at the school. Their ideas are from their knowledge and experience. it has more variety and opportunity than our limited thinking and knowledge. So I can say people will open doors where none seem to exist not only education.

Lesson 3~!~!

Lesson 3 was very interested to me. because this lesson was easy to understand and have good topic. Also he used some attractive videos such as give to me huge impact. This lesson mainly talked about Anthropology which is study of man. The professor teach what is sin, how it came, how sin affect us and how man changed by sin. Human was innocent first time. After sin came to us we are changed. It means we can go to hell by our sinful act. These kinds of thought are look like Christian idea. However this time he was not only Christian side. He also talked about opposite side by ask question. “How do differing views of mankind play into the social struggles and conflict we see in our culture?”. Also he shows some examples. “Sick people are made by a sick culture” by Abraham Maslow and “experience leads me to believe that it is cultural influences which are the major factor in our evil behavior” by Carl Rodgers. It shows first time people was kind, but cultures effect on people. This idea was pretty interested to me than Christian idea. Another issue of this lesson battle between human and god. It was very good arguing. I couldn’t remembered what exactly he contrast each other. it sounds like basic knowledge, but also deep enough. Anyway I enjoyed lesson 3, it was best class than last two lessons.
